5 days to go… Lift Up Your Eyes

I saw a video recently which really made me chuckle. It was CCTV of a women walking through a shopping centre. She was looking down at her mobile phone and wasn’t looking where she was going so she ended up falling full length into a pool of water.

I shouldn’t laugh really, because it could easily have been me. How often am I looking down at my mobile phone oblivious to what is happening around me?

Recently I was encouraged by the story of Abraham. God had given him a promise that he would have many descendants. He asked Abraham to look at the sand and told him that he would have more descendants than he could count (like the grains of sand) and then he asked him to look at the stars and repeated the same promise (more descendants than stars!) At the time it seemed impossible as he was really old and his wife was barren. What really encouraged me was that whether Abraham looked down at the sand, or up at the sky, he would see something that would remind him of the promise God had given him.

I don’t know whether you are approaching SYC looking down or up. Maybe things have been tough recently and you’re finding it hard to lift up your eyes, or maybe things have been great and your head is lifted high. Either way, I believe God wants to remind you of the good promises that he has for you – just like he had for Abraham! So, what are some of those promises?

  • He has a good plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • He will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5)
  • He will forgive you for any wrongdoing (1 John 1:9)
  • He will work all things out for YOUR good (Romans 8:28)
  • He is able to do more than you can ask or imagine (Eph 3:20)

There are so many more too!

So, as your approach SYC, remember the promises of God and begin to look up. Looking down will cause us to crash (like the women with the phone), so take a leaf out of King David’s book. He said in psalm 121:

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Lift up your eyes!
